A-State Football Four Down Territory - What Is It Going To Take?

Welcome to Four Down Territory which is a post I will make weekly with a few thoughts I have about things that are going on.

So, I’ll give you three thoughts on Arkansas State football or college football in general. Then, the last thought will be whatever I want it to be.

1: WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO GET OUT OF REBUILD MODE?

A few years ago this question would have been much easier to answer compared to today. A few years ago I could have easily said go recruit solid dudes that will come here, work their way into a role, then go to work for the team. That really is still the answer, but the problem today is the NIL and transfer portal. Every single coach in American is having to deal with that. We also have coaches that are beginning to call out other coaches for allegedly tampering with players before they ever enter the portal.

These days it is so hard to keep quality athletes, especially at Group of Five schools, because someone bigger with more money can and will come after those athletes. Let's be honest. There were a few dudes on last year's team that could really help this year that ended up hitting the portal and bouncing to other schools.

It is way too easy to do it. The NCAA is going to have to step up and work to close the pandora's box that they opened.

How do you get out of rebuild mode? Keep recruiting hard then figure out a way to convince studs to stay here ever when the big dogs come calling.

2: KEYS TO SUCCESS IN 2023:

There are several keys to success in 2023, but it all is going to begin and end in the trenches. Butch Jones and his staff will have to get the OL and DL both to gel quickly and efficiently for this team to have success. There are plenty of playmakers and game breakers on this team that can help with the big plays, but the QB is going to have to have protection, the RB's are going to have to have running lanes, and the DL is going to have to unleash absolute hell week in and week out.

Think back to the more successful teams Arkansas State has had in recent years. The OL and DL were both strong during those times.

3: RECRUITING IS GOING WELL:

I've made mention of this a couple of times recently, but I've been very impressed with the recruiting efforts of Butch Jones and his staff. They currently have 10 players committed to the Class of 2023 and very well could have more on the way very soon.

One young man that I'm told is a heavy lean towards Arkansas State is Fordyce DE Carmilo Allen. There have been numerous players from Fordyce that have been big time players for the Arkansas State program over the years, (I can't leave out Coach Larry Lacewell, either) so there is a bit of a pipeline to Arkansas State from Red Bug country. Allen is a young man that I'm told does everything right. He is well liked in his school and his community. I'm told his work ethic is second to none, and I've got one coach on the Fordyce staff that has told me they believe Arkansas State will be a great fit for Allen.

I mentioned Allen, along with six others, in THIS article yesterday. Check it out if you haven't already seen it.

4: I KNOW MANY DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT, BUT PATIENCE IS KEY:

I get it. We live in a world where we all want to win and we want to win now. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case here in the past three season's.

Look, Blake Anderson was very, very good to me. I've got a lot of love and mad respect for that dude, but the writing was on the wall before he left.

We began seeing a falloff his last two season's, and it really showed up that last season when he didn't have a winning record for the first time in his career. Recruiting was bad his last few years, and that has been an issue that has continued to plague this program since Butch Jones showed up on campus. I've also been told by NUMEROUS solid sources that a lot of Anderson's guys just refused to buy into Butch Jones and what he was selling.

Now, Butch's coaching style and attitude are certainly a lot different from what Anderson's was, and I was worried that we would see a clash because of that, but it has been a shame to see the amount of players that didn't want to buy in. We've seen a lot of them hit the portal. Several of them haven't played a down of football since they left here. One of them was pissed because he was convinced he was a D1 QB, but no other D1's offered him, so he went D2.

Stuff like this going on behind the scenes has hurt the production and the rebuild. This is stuff Butch Jones and staff have been working through.

The thing that I'm going to say that some may disagree with is that year three for Butch Jones is essentially year one. This program was that far in the hole when he got here. Now, I get it that year three is that magical year that everyone looks at a new coach to see what his stamp on the program is really going to look like, and in fairness I'm going to be looking for some of those things, but this rebuild goes deeper than a lot of people think is has, in my opinion.

Is Butch Jones the guy to get this program back to the top of the Sun Belt Conference? I can't answer that question. Only time will answer that question. However, I do know that he inherited an absolute mess of a program and has been having to work his way through it all in order to establish a firm foundation.

A-State Football Just for kicks and grins

Just for kicks and grins I had an AI generated article produced regarding Arkansas State football. Here is what the generator kicked out:

The Legacy of Arkansas State Red Wolf Football

Arkansas State University has a long and storied history of football excellence, and the 2023 season promises to be no different. Under the leadership of head coach Butch Jones, the Red Wolves are poised to continue their winning ways and bring home another Sun Belt Conference championship.

A Proud Tradition

Football has been an integral part of Arkansas State University for nearly a century, and the Red Wolves have consistently been one of the top programs in the Sun Belt Conference. With a rich history that spans more than 90 years, Arkansas State has produced countless All-Americans, NFL players, and conference champions.

The Red Wolves' success on the gridiron can be attributed to a number of factors, including a commitment to excellence, a strong coaching staff, and a talented group of players. But perhaps most importantly, it is the pride and passion of the Arkansas State community that has helped propel the team to such great heights.

A New Season Begins

The 2023 season promises to be another exciting chapter in the history of Arkansas State football. The team will kick off the season on September 2nd with a road game against the Oklahoma Sooners, marking the third all-time meeting between the two programs.

Following the season opener, the Red Wolves will return home to Centennial Bank Stadium for a three-game home stand in the month of September. This marks the first time in school history that Arkansas State will play three consecutive home games in the month of September.

The first home game of the season will be against Memphis, followed by matchups against Stony Brook and Southern Miss. The game against Southern Miss will also feature a Band Day theme, and fans are encouraged to come out and support the Red Wolves.

An Impressive Recruiting Class

Coach Butch Jones and his staff have been hard at work assembling an impressive recruiting class for the 2023 season. The class is ranked first in the Sun Belt Conference by Rivals, and includes 36 players from 15 different states.

Although just three of the nine players announced in February are high school recruits, the 23 total are the most announced as part of an A-State class since also signing 23 in 2006. Twelve of the remaining 13 class members are either FBS or FCS transfers, including six who were officially announced in February.

The class includes four quarterbacks, including high-school standout Christian Hunt and Colorado-transfer JT Shrout. The team also added Ole Miss-transfer Jalen Cunningham to the offensive line, and three transfers to the defensive side of the ball.

Celebrating 50 Years at Centennial Bank Stadium

The 2023 season marks the 50th year of football being played inside what is now known as Centennial Bank Stadium. To celebrate this milestone, Arkansas State Athletics has announced a series of special promotions, giveaways, and interactive opportunities for fans.

Beginning in July, fans will be asked to take part in a poll to crown the top game in the stadium's history. A bracket of 16 games was selected and seeded by a panel of media members and A-State historians. The eight first-round matchups will be live through Thursday, July 13.

Arkansas State University's Publications and Creative Services Department has created a commemorative logo as part of the 50th season celebration. This logo will be used throughout the season, including on a special collectible cup that will be sold at the Centennial Bank Stadium concessions stands.

Getting Your Tickets

Tickets for the 2023 season are available now, and fans are encouraged to secure their seats early to avoid missing out on any of the action. Season tickets, group tickets, and single game tickets are all available for purchase.

Additionally, Arkansas State is offering a special Family 4 Pack, which is four season tickets on the stadium's Upper East side for just $149. This is a great way for families to enjoy all the excitement of Red Wolf football without breaking the bank.

Conclusion

As the 2023 season approaches, the excitement around Arkansas State football is palpable. With a talented roster, a dedicated coaching staff, and a passionate fan base, the Red Wolves are poised to continue their winning ways and bring another Sun Belt Conference championship back to Jonesboro. So be sure to get your tickets, mark your calendars, and get ready for another exciting season of Arkansas State football.

Athlon Sports had this to say about Butch Jones...

It is that time of the year when different national media outlets begin offering their opinion pieces regarding teams and coaches from across the county. Athlon Sports is one of those. They have ranked Butch Jones as the 10th best coach in the Sun Belt Conference, and had this to say about him:

10. Butch Jones, Arkansas State
Entering Year 3 at the helm in Jonesboro has produced a mixed bag of results for Jones. The on-field product has struggled (5-19), but the program has inked two of the Sun Belt's top recruiting classes in back-to-back years. Will that translate into a jump in wins for '23 or '24? Jones' tenure at Tennessee (34-27) ended with his dismissal, but he has successful previous stints on his resume from stops at Cincinnati (23-14 from 2010-12) and Central Michigan (27-13 from 2007-09).

FOUR DOWN TERRITORY - Sun Belt Media Day's

Welcome to Four Down Territory which is a post I will make weekly with a few thoughts I have about things that are going on.

So, I’ll give you three thoughts on Arkansas State football or college football in general. Then, the last thought will be whatever I want it to be.

1: Sun Belt Conference Media Day's will be hosted next Tuesday and Wednesday:

It's that time of the year again, and I am absolutely pumped for it! SBC Media Day's will be held next week in New Orleans and we will get our first real chance at hearing from the head coaches and select athletes from every program within the conference.

Arkansas State will be represented by head coach Butch Jones, along with senior linebacker Melique Straker and junior safety Justin Parks. You can view the representatives from each team from the conference by Clicking Here.

Something I am looking forward to is hearing Butch Jones discuss how the team has progressed since spring ball came to an end, and what he thinks about the QB situation. I really think that is going to be the big story line surrounding fall camp this year. Colorado transfer J.T. Shrout and Jaxon Dailey will be the main two I have my eyes on during fall camp. I want to see who separates theirselves and how quickly they can do so. If there is no separation I would personally go with Dailey since he will have more years of eligibility and would be the future of the program.

2: Screw it. Let's see if Butch Jones and staff can find a way to start things off with a bang with an upset win over Oklahoma.

Look, I get it, on paper Oklahoma should absolutely run away with this game, and I picked OU to win this one in my article earlier this week, but damn it would be a lot of fun to see this team walk out of that game with a win!

Let's be honest. Oklahoma already thinks they have this in the bag. They will not give Arkansas State a single shot at winning this game. But, this team has absolutely NOTHING to lose. They can go out, play free, and leave it all on the field and let the cards fall as they may. If you do this and catch OU sleeping you never know what can happen.

Stranger things have happened in college football before. Why not find a way to let it happen here?!?!?

3: The Sun Belt Conference isn't going to be a joke:

I have said it numerous times and I will say it again; The Sun Belt Conference is now the best Group of Five conference in the country, in my opinion. Kudos to the Sun Belt brass for making the moves they did a couple of years ago to elevate this conference. This isn't the old days where you could have a mediocre team and find a way to win the conference. If you are going to win this conference now you are going to have to have a team that can absolutely bring it.

There are some stud football players in this conference now that will be Sunday players before it is all said and done. Not only that, but there are some quality coaches across the board within this conference.

The SBC has elevated itself, and it is going to be fun to watch how things continue to play out over the years.

4: I'm having a blast watching my kids grow up and get involved with sports.

I'm a dad just like many of you, and I have had an absolute blast watching my kids play sports here recently.

My oldest son is 15 and is ate up with baseball. He just finished his American Legion season where he played up on the 17u team at Sheridan. He finished the season with a 1.050 ERA in 6.2 innings pitched and a .364 batting average in 32 plate appearances with four doubles and three triples. He had a .957 fielding percentage with one error in the field playing second, short, third, and outfield throughout the summer. He is receiving camp invites, though we don't really know how serious anyone is at this point. However, it has been a lot of fun to watch him develop and it will be a lot of fun to see how his high school career goes over the next four years.

My middle son has taken a liking to football. He will be in the 8th grade this year. He played his first season of football last year after only playing peewee ball once in the third grade. He ended up being a starter on the offensive and defensive lines, and worked hard to grow as a player during the season and in the weight room over the offseason. It's going to be fun to watch him this fall!

My daughter has fallen in love with cheer, gymnastics, and karate. She is 10 and growing like a weed every day. She recently survived a roll over crash with my 81 year old grandpa after he blacked out at the wheel, hit a tree, then rolled the car 2-3 times. She was able to crawl out of the back of the car once it stopped rolling. She called 911 then called my wife. I can't begin to tell you how proud of her I am for being able to keep her composure in order to alert the authorities then to call us. She walked away with nothing more than seatbelt rash across her collarbone, while my grandpa was also unharmed. They determined that a change in his blood pressure medicine caused his blood pressure to bottom out, leading to him passing out at the wheel.

I'll say this, no one will ever be able to tell me there isn't a God after seeing that car and seeing my baby girl be able to crawl out of it without being harmed.

The level our program was at under Freeze, Malzahn, Harsin, and Anderson isn't good enough

We fell a part under Anderson, but the first few years he was here were still good. We had a lot of success under the other three guys, but that level of play isn't going to be good enough to get the job done in the new SBC. This conference has elevated and the level of play we got back then might be good enough for fourth or fifth in the conference.

Tennessee NCAA violations

The NCAA just released a statement on the punishment Tennessee will get for “hundreds” of NCAA violations.

Over the course of three seasons, the Tennessee football program committed 18 Level I violations — encompassing more than 200 individual infractions — most of which involved recruiting rules violations and direct payments to prospects, current student-athletes and their families, according to a decision released by a Division I Committee on Infractions panel. An additional four Level I unethical conduct violations occurred involving former university employees. The violations resulted in impermissible inducements and benefits totaling approximately $60,000. As a result, Tennessee failed to monitor its football program. Additionally, due to his personal involvement in the violations, the former football head coach violated head coach responsibility rules.
